Books

A book-an intermediate stage on the way from the forest into the land of artifical intelligences.

“What we gained by leaving the forest, and what will be taken away from us again, is turning around, opening up, and paging through.”

The choice in books is “a gesture that makes a choice about the way the book in question is to be read”. This makes sense in regards to being a store or library and scanning through

books. We make a decision about how we will read that book-what will we get out of it? Does it interest us?

Letters

Letter means short writing in German, and short written summary in English.

The idea that letters is waiting to hear from someone who wrote it. The postal philosophy the author proposes is that letters are founded on hope of receipt.

Newspapers

Duration is longer than broadcasted communication (radio, TV) or digital communication. The paper has staying power and recorded timestamp in history.

 

Digital Media

Relativity-the idea that space and time  relies on the relationship between the observers and the subjects.

Quanta-the new perception of the atom

The author makes the statement that the digital communication will overtake the alphanumeric and that we need to protest this change. That digital technologies are not superior to print and written communication. His fear stands in that we will lose a lot of our depth-we will cease to being critical readers.
