Project Plan Final

  • Project Outline:

  1. Canvas Instructure Training Set up- This portion was before I began creating the course. This was essential to success because it was the planning process. I was able to practice with the technology, figure out a timeline and design what I wanted out of my situation.
    1. Practice with free trial materials
    2. Meet with education director regarding the plan
    3. Play with creating the course and setting up modules
    4. Design the course
  2. Online Volunteer Training: Touch Tank: This situation is for new volunteers who are just on-boarded to the museum. There tends to be a gap between when we on-board volunteers and when they can  attend a training. A lot  times work schedules interfere as well, so an online portion is the direction that my boss, Volunteer Services Director and the Education Director want to take the museum volunteer training. This was something already on their plan, but the fact that I proposed my project to them made them want to work with me on getting it done. This is essentially be proposed as a plan for actually changing their training if I get it to meet their needs.
    1. Module 1: Introduction
      1. What is the Touch Tank?
      2. Where is it located in the museum?

  • Materials:download

    • Canvas Instructure free tutorial and other help guides
      • Found and used many help guides
      • Played with tutorial courses during two week free trial.
    • Needed list from education director
      • Provided expectations of the what he wants out of the course
      • I provided what I need for my plan
    • Video of touch tank handling
      • Video was completed by the education director and myself.
      • I played the student and he was the instructor.
      • It is a 10 minute video on horseshoe crab facts and handling.
      • We felt this was the most important one to start with a video of, because the handling is the most complex and important to do properly for the animal safety.
    • Images of the various creatures and proper handling
      • I have access to these materials through the Volunteer Services office binder.
    • Images of all of the artifacts and the tanks in the museum Touch Tank discovery area
      • I have access to these materials through the Education department.
    • Current Touch Tank Training manual
      • I have this from completing the training myself.

  • Timeline:

    • Meet with director  10/15 completed
    • Play with Canvas tutorial 10/20 completed
    • Create course in Canvas 11/8 completed
    • Get Touch Tank videos 11/11 completed
    • Develop Modules 1 & 2 11/8 completed
    • Develop Modules 3 & 4 11/17
    • Develop Modules 5 & 6 11/21
    • Develop Assessment and pass rate required 11/25
    • Create training survey for students 11/29
    • Final product done by 12/2
  • Concerns:

    • My only concern now is time. I am trying to get all that I need done, while keeping up with the other assignments for the class. I cannot find a good balance, so my notes have fallen by the wayside.
    • I am hoping to get enough ahead of schedule, and be able to catch up on my notes for the class during the asynchronous weeks.

Something fun from our museum (its pretty hilarious just thought I’d share) You can see lots of our animals 🙂

  1. Like: Your timeline is doable and you seem focused on your topic.
Confusion: Who will have access to Canvas? Where will information be stored after the course is over?
?: How will you obtain approval from the museum, and what is your contingency plan?
Details: How do your choices reflect your rhetorical situation?

    • Who will have access? The new onboarded volunteers will be given access information as soon as they complete a successful interview and set up.
Where will the information be stored? The information will live on the Canvas. I will have a back up saved in Google Documents. The course is never really over. The training is year round.
How will you obtain approval from the museum, and what is your contingency plan? I am working with the Director of Education. Granted it isn’t super easy, because we are a tourist attraction-many things come up and we cannot always meet. This week we are going to record an instructional video for me to use. I also have access to the training manual and other materials. I have been trained myself and have worked the exhibit, so I have hands-on experience to bring.

  2. I am very impressed with your project and it is definitely a good idea to collaborate. For videos, you should consider where you are going to get the equipment for a video. I am not sure if the museum has audio and video recording technologies you could use. It would definitely help to have a decent microphone!

I would be interested in seeing maybe some outlines of lesson plans for the modules as you go along.

How long should each module take?

    • The museum is going to provide the recording equipment and the education department is going to help create the videos. I have just recently discovered this, and I am very happy!
I think that each module will have three parts: Facts about the creature, Handling procedures and guest touching protcols. The entire module will like take 10-15 minutes to read through depending on the creature. The idea is that they will be able to complete this course between the time they are onboarded and when they come in for the on-the-job portion. So this can take them probably no more than a few hours if they do it all at once, or longer. I don’t want it to feel like SO MUCH WORK, but I want it to be in-depth enough to be effective.

  3. So if I understand correctly, each page features pictures of how to handle the creatures and specifics of the correct protocols of each tank? Will there be interactive features, or some sort of a quiz to gauge comprehension?

  4. I am going to have pictures and video in addition to the text information. There will be a short quiz at the end of each module probably no more than 5 questions- to make sure they at least read through it. Then we want a final comprehensive assessment 20 questions likely that they will need to get at least 80% on. The idea of 80% is that is is satisfactory and that the questions they get wrong they can bring them in to the face-to-face meeting and make sure they gather that information.
