Week 4: Sept 15th Notes #3

Lingua Fracta

Interface

Interface is the first chapter of the text. The author introduces his idea of print text versus new media interface. The ideas of rethinking how we look at interfaces in new media and how we view new media in a bigger picture. He argues that we view it as “What has been done” rather than “What can be done or used”. This is the basis for his arguments in the succeeding chapters.

Ecology

This is a chapter about putting together an environment that is new based on older concepts that had been used to to describe ecology in the rhetoric sense. Ethos, Logos and Pathos are traditional means to establish the credibility, logic and the emotion. The author creates three different ecological branches and they are code, practice and culture.

  • Code encompasses the communication and expressive aspects
  • Practice is activity that is directed and it uses code to produce an outcome
  • Culture is the most expansive from personal relationships, local communities, regions, national level and globally expansive.

Presentation1

Proairesis

The main difference between two types of invention: hermeneutic and proairectic. Hermeneutic is focused more on the final product. Proairesis is the action orĀ  “events that can still be”. I can see the relationship to this idea to the introduction to the text. The author is talking about the what has been done vs. what can be done. Hermenautic is what has and proairesis and what is happening now. I also see the emphasis in the “pro” part of the word and it makes me think of proactive. It is easy to understand that. I took some key words and made a word cloud below.

Pattern

Focuses on a change in arrangements. Wider based versus personal patterns in technology are discussed. For example an online journal would be a personal database, the point is for the person to store their thoughts and not monetary or public usage is the purpose. The author discusses narrative and database in that he says that we have reliance on database in society and really we need a combination of the two. Click below for examples:
